Birth Records
Where to look for birth records depends a lot on what kind of information you are looking for. The County Health Department maintains birth certificates for six months in order to make certified copies for authorized requesters. They also maintain a birth list for five years; this is a public record of birth information that has been authorized for release by the birth mother. If you need a certified copy of your birth certificate, you should contact the Certification Unit of the Oregon Center for Health Statistics. They maintain records of all births in Oregon from 1903 until the present. Access to birth records in Oregon is restricted (see below) and you should review the agency's policies to insure that you are eligible to obtain a certified birth record. If you are looking for City of Portland birth records, the Oregon State Archives holds birth records and a birth register dating from 1864 - 1917. Some of these records are restricted from public access (see below). If you are looking for geneological information on birth records dated prior to 1903 you may be able to locate them by looking in church records, announcements in local newspapers, family bibles, or other non-governmental sources. Access Restriction: Oregon Administrative Rule 333-011-096 states that all birth records (including indexes) have a 100 year access restriction. Access to vital records that are restricted must be obtained through the State Registrar. Contact Information: State Registrar Oregon State Archives Multnomah County Department of Health |
